Essex Youthbuild is a charity working with young people aged 11-19 years old, providing training in construction skills, health and safety, and functional skills (maths and English) leading to accredited qualifications.

Youthbuild provides mentoring and support to these young people who are frequently multiply disadvantaged with many not ‘succeeding’ at school. These young people often lead chaotic home lives, have few adult influences and may have special educational needs, physical disabilities or social, emotional or mental health issues.

Vocational qualifications in the GCSE years

The Key Stage 4 programme is designed to help young people gain vocational City & Guilds’ qualifications in Construction and develop all-important employability skills. Young people come to Essex Youthbuild through school and work towards Level 1 City & Guilds’ qualifications in Construction Skills.

We have found that for many young people, gaining some vocational experience at this crucial age helps them focus on their future and can improve their academic studies at school.

When nearing completion of their course, students receive one-to-one help with applications for college and apprenticeships and leave with a photographic portfolio of their work and accomplishments.

The Level 1 Award in Health & Safety in a Construction Environment is available to students over 16 years old. This Award includes topics:

  • Risk assessments
  • Plant & Machinery
  • Risks to Health in Construction
  • Manual Handling
  • Working at Height

The Award is assessed by students producing a portfolio of work evidencing their knowledge of the subjects.

Successful completion of this qualification entitles the holder, when combined with passing the CITB’s Health, Safety & Environment Test, to a five year Labourer’s CSCS Card - a passport to working in the UK construction industry.
